Fun Facts

The common name for Andromeda Camels is Dromedary Camel.

Dromedary camels have a lifespan of about 40-50 years

Dromedary camels originated in Arabia

A female camel is called a cow, a male camel is called a bull, and a baby is called a calf

Being longer legged and slimmer than the Bactrian (two-humped) camel, dromedaries have been known to carry a rider 115 miles (185 km) in less than 11 hours, and racing dromedaries can reach a top speed of 40 miles (65 km) per hour over short distances.

The species' distinctive features include its long, curved neck, narrow chest, a single hump (compared with two on the Bactrian camel and wild Bactrian camel), and long hairs on the throat, shoulders and hump. The coat is generally a shade of brown.

Camels sleep. They actually can sleep standing up, which helps keep them safe from predators. They sleep about six hours per night, and can withstand major temperature changes from the sweltering heat of the day to the cold desert nights. Wild camels roam for food at night and rest during the hot day.

The Dromedary Camel has adopted an adaptive feeding strategy to help it survive in the desert. This species only selects a few leaves from each plant. These camels are also capable of eating parts of the plant that other species avoid, such as the thorns of the acacia tree.

They can stand EXTREME temperatures, drink salt water and survive for long periods, as long as 6 months  with no food or water at all.

  • Camels only sweat in temperatures of 106°F (41C) or higher.
  • Camels are born with no hump.
  • Most camels will only spit when provoked, despite their reputation as spitters.
  • Water is not stored in camels' humps, which consist of fat.
  • When camels use up the fat stored in their hump, it will get smaller. It will fill up with fat Again when they eat and drink.
  • Camels can live as long as 6 months with no food or water.
