Harp seals are fantastic, resilient creatures perfectly designed for life in the cold Arctic!
Harp seals are adorable, fluffy white baby seals that live in the freezing Arctic and North Atlantic Oceans. They are famous for their "harp" shaped marking on their backs as adults and their incredible ability to swim in icy waters. They can hold their breath for up to 16 minutes!

Amazing Harp Seal Facts for Kids:
  • Super White Babies: Harp seal pups are born with bright white fur to help them blend into the ice. This special fur also helps absorb sunlight to stay warm, as they are born without thick fat (blubber).
  • The "Harp" Pattern: When they grow up, they lose their white fur and get light gray coats with a black, horseshoe-shaped (or harp-shaped) mark on their back.
  • Insane Divers: These seals are excellent swimmers and can dive to depths of nearly 1,000 feet to find fish!
  • No Ears! Harp seals are "earless" or "true" seals, meaning they don't have external ear flaps like sea lions do.
  • They "Shed" Everything: Every year, they travel back to the pack ice to shed their old fur and top layer of skin.
  • Fast Gainers: Baby harp seals are born in huge groups on floating ice and nurse on incredibly fatty milk—10 times fattier than cow's milk—helping them gain 5 pounds a day!
  • Whisker Power: Like cats, harp seals use their sensitive whiskers to feel vibrations in the water, which helps them hunt, even in the dark.
  • Not Picky Eaters: They are carnivores and eat a large variety of food, including fish, krill, and crustaceans.
  • Not Endangered: Despite living in a harsh environment, harp seals are not endangered and have a healthy, growing population.
  • "Singing" Seals: They make a wide range of vocal sounds.
